Dear [Full Name of Student],
We are delighted to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You have been selected for your extraordinary abilities and potential in the magical arts, and we are excited to welcome you into our great community of witches and wizards. The Hogwarts Express will depart from King's Cross Station at Platform 9¾ on 1st September. Please be sure to arrive early to ensure a smooth departure.
Your acceptance into Hogwarts is a tremendous honor, and it is our privilege to offer you a place here. Please find enclosed a list of the books and equipment required for your studies. You will need to complete all preparations before the start of term, which will begin promptly on 1st September. We kindly ask that you send your reply by 31st July, confirming your acceptance and letting us know if you will be arriving by broomstick, portkey, or a more conventional manner.
In addition to your first-year studies, you will undergo an important and highly anticipated event—the Sorting Ceremony. This ceremony, which takes place on the first night of the school year, will determine into which of the four Houses you will be placed. As you know, each House at Hogwarts possesses its own strengths and qualities, and the Sorting Hat will take into account your unique qualities when making this decision.
Here is a brief introduction to the four Houses of Hogwarts:
-
Gryffindor – House of courage, bravery, and daring. If you are someone who is fearless in the face of danger and passionate about standing up for what is right, you may find yourself drawn to the bold red and gold of Gryffindor. The House was founded by Godric Gryffindor, who valued courage and chivalry above all else.
-
Hufflepuff – House of loyalty, patience, and fair play. If you are hardworking, kind-hearted, and dedicated to fairness, you might find your place within the warm yellow and black walls of Hufflepuff. Founded by Helga Hufflepuff, this House values those who are true to themselves and who work tirelessly for the good of all.
-
Ravenclaw – House of wit, wisdom, and creativity. If your mind is sharp, full of curiosity, and you possess a thirst for knowledge, the thoughtful blue and silver of Ravenclaw may be the House where you belong. Rowena Ravenclaw valued intelligence above all else and sought students with a keen mind for learning.
-
Slytherin – House of ambition, cunning, and resourcefulness. If you possess a strong sense of ambition and determination, and are not afraid to use your wit and resourcefulness to achieve your goals, the green and silver of Slytherin may call to you. Salazar Slytherin valued ambition and strength of character, and he sought students who showed leadership potential.
We do encourage you to approach the Sorting Ceremony with an open mind, and remember that the Sorting Hat will always choose where it believes you will be happiest and most successful. It is a magical experience that marks the beginning of your journey at Hogwarts.
Once sorted, you will join your new Housemates and become part of the Hogwarts family. Your House will serve as your base for the next seven years, where you will live, study, and form lifelong bonds with your fellow students. As part of your House, you will attend classes, participate in magical activities, and earn and lose points that contribute to your House's standing in the House Cup.
In addition to your studies and House activities, you will participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities. Quidditch, the wizarding world’s favourite sport, is one such option, and you may be chosen to join your House team. Other clubs include the Dueling Club, the Magical Creatures Society, and many more. In addition, you may wish to visit the Hogwarts Library—home to countless tomes of magical lore and ancient books, some of which are restricted to advanced students.
As part of your first-year curriculum, you will begin with the following subjects:
- Transfiguration with Professor McGonagall
- Charms with Professor Flitwick
- Potions with Professor Snape
- Herbology with Professor Sprout
- Defense Against the Dark Arts with Professor Lupin
- History of Magic with Professor Binns
- Astronomy with Professor Sinistra
- Care of Magical Creatures with Professor Hagrid
In addition, you will take Flying Lessons with Madam Hooch and begin your study of Magical Theory, which will provide you with an understanding of the fundamental principles of magic.
As a new student, you will also receive your first wand, which we trust will choose you wisely. The wand is an essential part of your magical education, and we recommend that you visit Ollivanders in Diagon Alley to select the wand that best suits your magical talents. The wandmaker there is the most respected in all of the wizarding world, and it is said that a wand always chooses its wizard.
Important Notes:
-
Uniforms: The required uniform consists of the following:
- Dark robes, with the House colors prominently displayed.
- A white shirt and black trousers or skirt.
- A House scarf or tie.
- A wand and your broomstick for flying lessons (you may purchase these from Diagon Alley).
-
Travel: On the day of your departure, please ensure that you have your train ticket for Platform 9¾ and that you arrive on time. The Hogwarts Express departs promptly at 11:00 AM, and the journey is one you will remember for years to come.
-
Magical Creatures: It is highly recommended that you familiarize yourself with the magical creatures in your first year. Care of Magical Creatures is a practical subject, and you will encounter various species such as Flobberworms, Hippogriffs, and Blast-Ended Skrewts.
-
House Points: Each House competes throughout the year for the House Cup, awarded to the House with the most points. Points are earned for good behaviour, achievements, and academic excellence, and lost for misconduct. The House with the most points at the end of the school year wins the coveted House Cup.
We look forward to welcoming you to Hogwarts, where you will embark on a journey filled with magic, mystery, and adventure. There is much to learn, and much to experience, but always remember: you are now part of a tradition that has lasted over a thousand years.
Yours sincerely,
